Rounders vs Accumulators

Scott Adams published a post titled Rounders vs Accumulators. It is one of those oversimplifications of humans that makes life so much easier to handle for some of us.

I did find the simplification striking though. I am definitively a rounder. The main problem I have with my rounding life style is that I can’t handle a level two problem escalating with time. In my binary book any problem will stay a zero until it is a ten.

As Scott says; the rounder normally lives a happier life. I think most people getting stress related symptoms are accumulators. We are faced with level one and two problems every day. By accumulating them the critical problem level will be passed because of lots of small things.

I would like to know if these characteristics are inherited or if they they are brought upon us when we grow up. I’ll keep an eye on my children. If it is a social issue then maybe we can use this metaphor to convert accumulators that has hit the roof.

Bring your own food to work

Filed under:Frugality, Life, Money — posted by admin on July 10, 2007 @ 8:34 am

The savings are usually not as big as they seem at first glance since home made food also costs money but they are still substancial. Living in Stockholm Sweden it is not unrealistic to save $5 a day. That’s about $100 a month you can spend of fun things instead of bad food.

Apart from saving a lot of money per year you will probably make better food at home than the one you can eat at the lunch restaurant.

Since it’s faster to heat your own food than standing in line at a crowded restaurant you will also save a lot of time.At my work I can go home earlier if I take a shorter lunch brake. If you do not have flexible working hours that half hour each day is well spent taking a brisk walk. That is free and good exercise. If you’re not the moving type, but a regular reader of this blog the saved time is a splendid opportunity to write for your blog. Bring pen and paper from home so that there is no ground for discussions of making private money with company resources.

Mistakes by a junior reviewer

Filed under:Blog, Money, Review, Writing — posted by admin on @ 8:30 am

Since this blog is new and lacks a decent page rank the traffic based revenue opportunities are quite limited. Even if I have a high click through rate on contextual ads and affiliate links the absolute numbers are low.

I have found that writing reviews for those review networks accepting low ranking blogs is the best initial monetizer. Since every review is also a post it will increase your search engine surface and generate more future traffic.

A big mistake I believe I made when writing my initial reviews is that I focused only on the requirements of the opportunity. If the requirement was 100 words I wrote 101 words and submitted the post without giving it a second thought.

Now that I have thought about it a little more I am a bit sorry I didn’t do more. Future advertisers will read those reviews and only see some words surrounding the advertisers link. My uninspired writing made the reviews look more like bought links than real reviews. By writing good reviews the price will be higher than other blogs with the same page ranking. The reviews will be more than just paid links.

My three best traffic generators

Submit posts to Blog Carnivals
Go to Blog Carnival and submit your post to all carnivals you can find that matches your niche. If you have several posts you want to publish, save them for later carnivals. Since many of the carnivals are hosted by a new blogger every week you will spread your back links among more blogs that way. Even if a carnival is hosted by the same blogger every time your back links will be on more pages if you submit articles over a longer period of time. Since the primary reason to submit an article to a carnival is to get readers it must be better to have one link in five issues than five links in one issue.

Participate in contests and group writing projects
This post is submitted to Blog Project: Three and I have participated in the Top 5 - Group Writing Project with my other blog. Even though the Top 5 post was done in May I still see some traffic from the other participants. It made a huge impact on the amount of incoming links to idstam.com. Since you know your post will reach a broader audience than you usual posts it is an inspiration to do a litter better than average.

Take part in a controversial discussion.
This is something I did at idstam.com when the legal status of TestDriven.NET was questioned by Microsoft. That post gave me more comments than anything else and I still get some traffic from Google to those pages. Be careful though. Everything you write online is saved so make sure you write things you can defend and take responsibility for. Your blog is on big billboard for advertising yourself. A couple of years down the line a controversial post might become like a smelly shoe you can’t get rid of.

(At first I was going to add self submitting posts to reddit.com to this list but that traffic makes the Google Analytics graph look like a roller coaster.)

Get paid for reviews

Filed under:Blog, Money, Writing — posted by admin on July 5, 2007 @ 8:30 am

I find writing paid reviews actually help me becoming a better writer. It forces me to think in other ways when writing. It also gives me ideas for posts, both the actual paid review and related areas I find interesting.

Blogsvertise is the latest service for paid reviews I submitted this blog to.

What I really like about Blogsvertise is that they accept blogs that do not have high Alexa and Google rankings. Both PayPerPost and ReviewMe wants to have blogs that are already mature in their network.

So if your blog is new and you still want to earn money by writing reviews sign up for Blogsvertise.

Free storage online

Now that Microsoft offers 500 MB free storage with their beta of Live Drive it is worth noticing that Diino offers 2GB for free.

I have not tried both services yet, but since Microsoft doesn’t accept all submissions to their beta I think you should give Diino a chance. At least Diino is out of beta.

Either way, it doesn’t hurt to use the storage at both Microsoft Live Drive and Diino since they are both free.

Wallet found

I have to stop doing things in the mornings. It fails more often than succeds.

While reordering things in my bike bag I had put the wallet in my bookshelf among the CD-covers. Yes, I know; I am not a very bright person in the morning.

I should probably train the kids to take care of me instead of the other way round.

Paid review: MagsDirect.com

Filed under:Paid posts, Review — posted by admin on @ 10:28 am

To become a better writer you need to read a lot. The magazine business these days is all about writing in a way that will make both readers and advertisers happy so MagsDirect can surely help you making more money from your blog.

Since writers for magazines are treated as journalists, in contrast to bloggers, there is still lots of information that you will read first in a magazine.

MagsDirect is a site that sells subscriptions to a wide vareity of magazines. Whithin their 100% satisfaction guarantee they credit an ammount coresponding to the outstanding issues to the original payment.

If you are dissatisfied for any reason, you can cancel your subscription and we will credit you via your original payment for all issues that haven’t yet been sent to you.

Your contact and personal information will never be sold or rented or used for direct marketing or spamming.

The business section offers almost a hundred different publications. That may be a bit overwhelming to browse, but I found the full category listing on the first page to be well balanced.

Lost wallet

Filed under:Life, Money — posted by admin on @ 9:14 am

The recent frugality and tidiness commitment really got a blow yesterday. I lost my wallet at the train station when I pulled some rain protection out of my bag. My sleeping habits and lack of routines with the children in the mornings makes me a nerve wreck until I get to work.

Fortunately no one had used the cards. All cards but the drivers license are canceled. I am going to wait a couple of days to apply for a new drivers license since it is a real hassle to get a new one when I have no other means of identification.  At least that is the experience I have from the last time I had to renew it. At that time the Swedish passports weren’t accepted as domestic identification. Hopefully they are now.

There weren’t much money in the wallet, but I had some parking receipts that I won’t get paid for now.

To be continued…
